Introduction to Musical Theater

Have you ever wanted to perform in front of large crowds on the storied stages of Broadway? Then try out our revolutionary Acting for Theater course. You’ll train under real, professional Theater coaches who will teach you centuries-old techniques combined with more modern ones used by the stars of the stage themselves.

This is a 4-week course.

Ages 13 and up.

Week 1: Getting Started
We will discuss how the individual parts of the body can move, explore Basic Dance/Movement steps, exercise our voices through common vocal techniques, learn the tunes and words of a musical theatre song, and incorporate basic dance/movement steps to various words and/or musical measures and phrases.
Week 2: Moving forward
This week we will learn how to warm up the body by reviewing isolations, warm up the voice by reviewing scales and arpeggios, review the tune and words of the song, review the basic dance/movement steps to the various words and musical measures and phrases, learn additional movements to incorporate at additional points in the song, and review additional sections of the song and coordinating movements
Week 3: Final Rehearsal
This week we will warming up the body by reviewing isolations, warm up the voice by reviewing scales and arpeggios, review the tune and words of the song, review the basic dance/movement steps to the various words and musical measures and phrases, learn additional movements to incorporate at additional points in the song complete the staging of the song, review additional sections of the song and coordinating movements, review the entire musical number
Week 4: Your First Performance
This week we will warm up the body by reviewing isolations, warm up the voice by reviewing scales and arpeggios, review the tune and words of the entire song, review the basic dance/movement steps to the various words and musical measures and phrases of the entire song, review problematic sections of the song and coordinating movements, perform the number in its entirety as a Dress Rehearsal, and finally video your performance and/or perform for an invited audience

EDWARD R. MURRAY is an accomplished actor, singer, and dancer, as well as a director and choreographer. Originally from New York, he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts from Long Island University and has continued training and working in the performing arts ever since. He has been a student at HB Studios, Broadway Dance Center, and Singers Forum; he has trained with such notables as Arabella Hong Young, Patrick DeGennaro, Lina Koutrakas, Rick Jensen, Lainie Munro, Stephanie Scott, and Mihaela Mihut (just to name a few). In addition, he has worked with the now Tony award winning director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw when the twowere just starting out in the business. He has created and performed more than ten solo cabaret shows in New York City, appearing at famed venues “Don’t Tell Mama” and “The Metropolitan Room.” Some of his favorite roles that regional theatre audiences have seen him perform include Vernon Gersch in “They’re Playing Our Song,” Max Detweiler in “The Sound of Music,” George in “La Cage Au Folles,” Michael in “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks,” and Herr Schulz in “Cabaret.” Serving as a director/choreographer some of his favorite productions include “Guys and Dolls,” “Peter Pan,” “Blood Brothers,” and “The King and I” among many others. He taught high school English and Theatre Arts for three decades, and most recently one of his former students made her Broadway Debut in “Shucked” in April of 2023, for which she received a Theatre World Outstanding Broadway Debut award. During her acceptance speech she stated that it was because of Mr. Murray–his love, support, and passion for the arts–that has helped her get to such heights! He is thrilled to be able to continue guiding those seeking knowledge, experience, and fun through Theatre Arts!
